Our Top Three Limited Edition Jeep Wranglers

While Jeeps are exciting all on their own, offering more fun perks than most other models, limited edition Jeep models add even more unique twists that make you stand out from the crowd. Of course, as you’d expect, we’re focusing specifically on Jeep Wrangler special edition models. And trust us, there are a LOT of them. #1 – The Willys Wheeler

Based on the original Willys-Overland CJ model that was used in World War II, the Willys Wrangler comes with its own unique aura. While the Wrangler is known for its early military history, the Willys model is designed specifically with Jeep history in mind.

This model first debuted in 2014 and has since been offered as an option with each passing year. When it first came out, the Willys Wrangler came with 17-inch wheels, a black grille, and mud tires. It even included a limited-slip differential to help prevent spin-out. The 2014 Willys Wrangler also set the branding standard for all future models by including a “Willys” decal on the front hood, along with a “4-wheel drive” sticker on the back right hatch.

That said, the Willys edition has improved greatly over the years. For example, a 2020 Willys Wrangler will land you all of the above, along with bright LED headlights and full underbody armor. No matter what Willys year you choose, though, keep in mind that you’re gaining more standard ground clearance than any other Wrangle model, including the Rubicon.

The best part of it is that the Willys is more affordable than the Rubicon. The main difference between the two is that the Rubicon is the only Jeep Wrangler that includes the Rock-Trac system, which is Jeep’s number one off-roading drivetrain option. However, this is mainly beneficial for hardcore rock climbers. If you’re more into going mudding than tackling rocky roadways, the Willys is the perfect limited-edition Jeep for you.

Speaking of the Rubicon, let’s move on to our next top limited edition Wrangler model: The Rubicon Recon.

#2 – The Rubicon Recon

Imagine Jeep Wrangler’s top off-roading prowler, the Rubicon, but with even more off-roading capability. While that sounds impossible outside of aftermarket add-ons, it’s not. Oh, and you’ll also be driving the flashiest Wrangler around thanks to the Recon’s aesthetic changes. Thanks to the Rubicon Recon, off-roading has never been more entertaining (or more stylish).

On a smaller scale, this model one-ups both the standard Rubicon and the Willys by taking the mud tires from standard 32-inchers to 33s. It offers everything that the regular Rubicon does, plus stronger off-roading gear. For example, the Recon has stronger axles and rock rails, along with more durable front and end forages. Aesthetically, Recon drivers get red-accented interior and exterior perks, including red stitching and a red and black hood decal.

Thanks to the Recon’s impressive legacy, the 2021 Rubicon gets a package based on the Recon, which is called the “Xtreme Recon.” This package offers massive 35-inch tires, 12.9 inches of ground clearance, and a better crawl ratio than any other Wrangler (or Ford Bronco) on the market. When we say “rock crawl ratio,” this essentially describes the vehicle’s ability to handle rocky trails both safely and steadily.

The Rubicon Recon is the best special edition model for hardcore off-roaders. Overall, we love the Rubicon Recon’s legacy for its balanced combination of off-roading capability and flashy aesthetic appeal.

#3 – The Freedom Edition

We’ve touched on our favorite off-roading special edition Wranglers, but there are some fun aesthetic-based special edition Jeep Wranglers out as well. Our favorite model as far as appearance goes is the Freedom Edition Wrangler, which first debuted in 2012 and is available on later models as well. In fact, this edition is so popular that when Jeep skipped out on the 2013 Freedom Edition, fans demanded it make a comeback; and so it did.

Are you feeling proud to be an American? You can express that patriotism without saying a word, thanks to the Freedom Edition Wrangler. This model is based on the Wrangler Sport, which is the most affordable one on the market. However, you will pay a bit more for the special edition. For example, the 2021 Freedom Edition Wrangler set buyers back $1,200 more than the regular Sport edition.

That said, the extra $1,200 included a lot. You’ll get to choose from red, white, and blue exterior color options. Later on down the line, Jeep also started offering its standard color options too, but the red, white, and blue options just seem most fitting.

The Freedom Edition comes with a military star decal on the hood, a blue gas tank cover, and “Oscar Mike” interior and exterior badging. Wondering who Oscar is? Well, he’s not anyone. Instead, “Oscar Mike” is military slang for “on the move.” When someone asks us if we’re free on the weekend, we simply say we’re too busy hanging out with Oscar Mike!

Finally, you’re doing your own service by purchasing one of these models, thanks to Jeep’s generosity. For every Freedom Edition Wrangler sold new, Jeep donates $250 to benefit the non-profit USO (United Service Organizations). How Many Special Edition Wranglers Are There?

The answer to this question is that there are more than you’d think. In fact, the 2020 Wrangler alone came with eight different limited edition options. This includes anniversary editions, the “Back & Tan” trim, everything we included here, and much more. The Wrangler family is not small, to say the least. While most vehicles require drivers to upgrade via aftermarket parts, the Wrangler offers plenty of room for customization opportunities with its stock vehicles.

These three Wranglers are top-notch options, but which one do we recommend the most, you ask? While we love all three models for different reasons, our top pick has to be the Willys Wrangler. Here’s why.

This model pays homage to the Wrangler’s initial purpose while offering more off-roading capabilities than any other Wrangler besides the Rubicon. Realistically, the Willys model is perfect for the average Jeep lover, offering the best value for its price. While we highly recommend the Rubicon to hardcore off-roaders and the Freedom Edition to America-loving Jeep enthusiasts, the Willys model has the perfect balance of capability and affordability. It also offers some of that sentimental value that you get with the Freedom Edition.
