Jeep Uconnect: Breaking Down the Basics
Jeep’s connectivity software is called Uconnect. You might be surprised to learn that it has been around since 2004, and the first Jeep models to offer it were the Grand Cherokee, Commander, and Liberty. Since then, the system has been updated several times to reflect modern driver’s needs and current technology, allowing it to blend seamlessly with smartphones and other digital devices. But what exactly does Uconnect do? The answer is “more than you might think.”
First and foremost, it’s important to understand that several different versions of Uconnect can be found in used Jeep models. For instance, if you’re looking for a Jeep Wrangler, the 2022 model year offers either a seven-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 4 or Uconnect 4C NAV, which has integrated navigation. There is also Uconnect 3 with a five-inch touchscreen. Now that you know that, the next question might be, “What do the numbers mean?” That answer is easy as well; the numbers correlate to the “generation” of Uconnect. Uconnect 5 is the latest generation of the software. Now, let’s look at what each of these offers in terms of connectivity.
Uconnect 5
Uconnect 5 can be found on more recent pre-owned Jeep models. However, the version of Uconnect 5 you get depends on the specific trim level. Take the Grand Cherokee, for example. You can find Uconnect 5 with an 8.4-inch touchscreen that gives you access to features like Bluetooth streaming audio, voice commands, and connectivity to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can also find Uconnect 5 with a 10.1-inch touchscreen that offers everything the smaller touchscreen does. A third option, which is Uconnect 5 with Navigation, makes road trips easier, as you’ll easily be able to navigate your way around Palmer Lake.
Uconnect 5 is the most powerful of the Uconnect line, with a faster processing speed, quicker response time, a more user-friendly experience, and better graphics. Additionally, it’s fully customizable and allows you to store up to five profiles, each with its own specific home menus. As an added bonus, you only need to tap one button to toggle between users.
Uconnect 4C
Uconnect 4C is another version you’ll find in many of the used Jeeps on our lot. It has a touchscreen interface that is streamlined and easy to use. Standout features that accompany this system include access to SiriusXM Guardian. This service allows you to get assistance during an emergency, sends an automatic alert when your airbag deploys, and also gives you access to roadside assistance if you run out of gas or get a flat tire. Uconnect 4C also works with compatible phones to seamlessly connect to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and it provides you with other SiriusXM features, such as SiriusXM Traffic Plus and SiriusXM Travel Link.
Additionally, you’ll have access to voice commands, wireless connectivity, contact syncing, hands-free calling, and more when the system is paired with a compatible phone. All you need to do is follow the onboard commands to connect your phone, and the system does everything else.
Uconnect 4 and Uconnect 3
Uconnect 4 is a slightly older system than Unconnect 4C and doesn’t have all the connectivity features. However, you still have access to SiriusXM and can connect compatible phones through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Like the other Uconnect options, Uconnect 4 allows for voice commands, Bluetooth connectivity, and contact syncing. If the Jeep model you choose has Uconnect 3, you’ll still have available SiriusXM, voice commands, Bluetooth connectivity, and contact syncing, but you will not have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and will be limited to a five-inch touchscreen.
To get the most out of the Uconnect 4C or Uconnect 5 system, you can download the Jeep Connect app. For compatible Jeeps, this will allow you to access certain remote vehicle operations, such as unlocking and locking your Jeep, starting the engine, or locating it after the football game at Falcon Stadium. Versions of Uconnect with Alexa built-in allow you to use these features by simply asking Alexa to perform the actions. Another perk of the Jeep Connect app is the drive alerts you can set up. For instance, if a teen driver is behind the wheel, you can set speed limits and pinpoint the Jeep’s location whenever you need to.
Jeep Infotainment Features
Beyond enjoying a view of the great outdoors as you explore in your new-to-you Jeep, you can also lean into Jeep’s infotainment features to keep you and your passengers entertained during the drive. That starts with SiriusXM, which is available in every Uconnect version. SiriusXM is a subscription service that gives you access to satellite radio stations. Depending on the subscription you choose, you may also enjoy it on your phone, tablet, or laptop.
Many of the used Jeeps on our lot also have access to an in-vehicle 4G Wi-Fi hotspot that allows your passengers to check social media, assess their favorite playlists, or check in on their emails. Finally, in larger used Jeep options like the Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer, you might find a rear entertainment system that allows your backseat passengers to play games and watch movies as you drive to your next destination or as you relax under the stars at the Palmer Lake Regional Recreation Area.
