How Often Should You Service Your Jeep?

Buying a Jeep means joining the Mopar family, a name renowned for parts and accessories that make maintaining and customizing your Jeep convenient and affordable. Generally speaking, how often you should service your Jeep depends on the type of Jeep you drive and the conditions. For example, if you drive a Wrangler and spend a lot of time on dirt roads and navigating technical terrain, you may find more frequent oil changes and air filter replacements are necessary to keep your Wrangler running its best.

Mopar and The Faricy Boys make keeping up with your Jeep’s maintenance easy with a general guide of routine service needs. For example, at 20,000 miles, Mopar recommends inspecting the suspension, front and rear axle fluid, and brake linings. You’ll also want to have the cabin air filter replaced and the parking brake adjusted. Many of these inspections carry over to the 30,000-mile and 40,000-mile services, along with changing the manual transmission fluid if you use your Jeep to tow heavy loads.

When your Jeep reaches 60,000 miles, it’s likely time to replace the spark plugs and the transfer case fluid. You may also have to change the transmission fluid, especially if you’re towing a heavy load, spending a lot of time off-road, or driving in temperatures above 90 degrees. The next major service interval occurs at 100,000 miles, which is when our technicians will inspect the suspension, fluids, and brakes again. They’ll also replace the cabin air filter and, if needed, the spark plugs. It might also be time to replace the engine coolant.

Amid these intervals and beyond, you’ll also need to have your Jeep’s oil changed and tires rotated. Our service technicians will conduct a multi-point inspection to look for potential issues during these visits. This proactive approach extends the longevity of your vehicle and can substantially reduce the risk of complex repairs that are costly when ignored or overlooked.

What Routine Maintenance is Vital to Your Jeep?

Scheduled service at 20,000 miles and beyond is slightly different than routine maintenance because it occurs less frequently. Regular maintenance includes oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, air filter replacements, tire balancing, brake inspections, and alignments. These services are an integral part of our daily operations and are several ways we can help keep your Jeep running its best.

Oil Changes

Oil changes are vital to your Jeep’s longevity because of the critical role oil plays in how your Jeep operates. Oil lubricates, cools, and cleans the engine, allowing it to run its best. For example, oil lubricates the engine’s many moving parts and reduces friction or heat. This lubrication doesn’t force your engine to work as hard, which burns less fuel. Simultaneously, the oil also picks up dirt and debris that can harm the engine’s operation.

Because of its many jobs, oil loses its effectiveness over time and turns into sludge. At this point, your Jeep’s “Change Engine Oil” light may notify you that it’s time to visit our service center. If you ignore it, you may find that your Jeep burns more fuel or is prone to overheating, especially in warmer temperatures. The best approach is to proactively monitor your Jeep’s oil life status and know how to check the oil the old-fashioned way (under the hood). And as always, remember that the harder you drive your Jeep, the more oil it will use and the more diligent you should be about routine oil changes.

Air Filters

Jeeps are destined to get a little mud on the tires, which can play a significant role in the longevity of your Jeep’s air filters. For example, the recommended replacement interval to replace the air filter is every three years or 30,000 miles. However, if you spend a lot of time on the trail or in dusty environments, you’ll need to replace the filter sooner to ensure clean air gets to the engine.

The engine’s air filter is far more critical since it directly impacts performance and power, but you’ll also want to keep an eye on the cabin air filter. This filter keeps the air inside the cabin clean, actively removing foul odors and air particles. Unfortunately, when you forgo replacing the cabin air filter, you may find your Jeep takes on an unpleasant odor that won’t go away.

Tire Rotations

When you bring your Jeep in for an oil change, you’ll usually have the tires rotated. But, believe it or not, tires are often one of the most forgotten aspects of routine maintenance. It’s only when they are stranded on the side of the road with a flat that most people think about their tires.

By regularly rotating your tires, you’re extending their longevity, improving your Jeep’s handling, and proactively managing tread wear. If you drive a model like the Wrangler that comes with a full-size spare, be sure to add the spare into the rotation. This makes that fifth tire incredibly valuable, rather than just part of the Wrangler’s signature aesthetic.
