Following the success of their original Jeep Grand Cherokee, the second generation of the SUV debuted in 1999. The redesigned “WJ” Jeep featured more angular lines and curves, but it still retained many of the same attributes as the original Grand Cherokee. The second-generation Jeep came equipped with a pair of engine options. The 4.0-liter straight-six was the more common inclusion, as the affordable unit could pump out a respectable 195 horsepower and 230 pounds-feet of torque. If drivers wanted even more power, they could opt for the 4.7-liter V8, although it cost a bit extra to secure the 235-horsepower engine.

The vehicle also featured a new four-wheel-drive option, the Quadra-Drive technology. The system helped provide increased traction to each wheel, making the Grand Cherokee an excellent choice for off-roading. Meanwhile, the 45RFE and 545RFE automatic transmission made it significantly easier to switch gears while also improving the vehicle’s drivability.

Luckily, these revisions weren’t exclusive to the exterior and under the hood. The Grand Cherokee’s interior also saw several changes for the 1999 model year. The modified body allowed the engineers to include larger rear doors, which variously provided more space for the rear passengers. Several of the controls were repositioned, making them easier to access, while the information screen was also moved, providing a better vantage point for the driver.

Perhaps most importantly, the new generation of Grand Cherokees offered a significantly stronger frame. The UniFrame construction, which was slightly based off Porsche’s body design, provided more protection for the vehicle’s passengers. With more than 70-percent of the vehicle’s underbody composed of high-strength metal, it was expected that the vehicle would be better suited to absorb the majority of impact during a collision.

Best of all, a used second-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee is affordable! A 1999 or 2000 model could be secured for less than $5,000, although you’ll have to dish out more money for a lower-mileage model.

When it comes down to it, the second-generation SUV provides several advantages that the other models do not. It’s more modern than the previous generation, and the engine is significantly more powerful and capable. Meanwhile, a used second-generation Grand Cherokee is significantly cheaper than later generations, making it an excellent value-buy.
