A few years ago, auto manufacturers across the world agreed that it was time to reconsider the sustainability of an industry built on fossil fuels. While nearly everyone can agree that personal cars are a necessary mode of transportation, the shift to electric vehicles has raised a lot of questions, including about the future of the off-roading segment. Historically speaking, vehicles require a lot of extra juice when navigating tough trails. Furthermore, it’s easier to carry an extra gas can or two than it is to bring along extra batteries. These are good questions, and with drivers starting to think about looking for a Jeep Recon for sale, we’re here to provide answers.

So far, the Jeep brand has only teased the all-electric 2026 Recon. We have a handful of photos and just enough details to get excited. Why Do We Need Another Electric Jeep?

Jeep’s 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) lineup has been around since 2021, and many drivers feel it has already satisfied the need to make traditionally less economical vehicles like the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee more fuel efficient. The 4xe models allow drivers to switch between all-electric and all-gasoline modes, as well as a Hybrid Mode that automatically balances between the two.

The 4xe PHEV models charge much like battery-electric vehicles, giving drivers several charging options depending on how quickly they need to charge their vehicle. Level 1 charging involves using a standard household plug, for example, while Level 2 requires a 240v connection or a dedicated charging station. Level 3 is the most rapid charging option, achieved at public DC Fast Charging stations, but is not available for the 4xe models. Still, the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe have demonstrated that a Jeep can still be a Jeep without leaving a huge carbon footprint, so the brand has moved on to all-electric vehicles.

The Jeep Recon was revealed in September 2022, when Jeep announced its plans to offer a fully electric lineup. As the Stellantis CEO at the time, Carlos Tavares, noted, “Today’s news from Jeep brand is yet another example of how our American brands are transforming themselves to support our aggressive decarbonization plans.” He further stated, “We’re confident that our upcoming launches will thrill our customers and keep them loving the great American brands they’ve grown up with.”

With EVs like the Avenger and Compass in Europe and the Recon and Wagoneer S in North America, the brand has fulfilled its promise of presenting four new all-electric vehicles in these markets. But what can we expect from this all-new model from Jeep?

What Is the Jeep Recon?

While the Jeep name is often considered synonymous with supreme off-roading skills in models like the Wrangler and Gladiator, there are also plenty of road-friendly SUVs in the brand’s lineup, from the Compass to the Wagoneer. So, which type of Jeep is the new Recon?

Enthusiasts will be happy to hear that the Recon is effectively a fully electric competitor to the iconic Wrangler. You can even pop the doors off the Recon to get especially in touch with nature. The red front tow hooks and glare-reducing hood in many early images indicate at least one trim of the new Jeep Recon will be equipped for some gnarly conditions. We also have confirmation that the Trail Rated badge will appear on the Recon, though we don’t have details yet about whether all trims or only some trims will receive the honor.

But it’s also an electric vehicle. Some drivers stay away from the traditional gas-powered Wrangler due to its low fuel economy and the road noise created by its boxy structure. An all-electric vehicle requires zero trips to the gas station and offers a whisper-quiet hum as it glides through the streets. It’s probably safe to say that the Recon will offer the best of both Jeep worlds, with enough off-road equipment to satisfy a strong appetite for adventure while maintaining an enjoyable on-road presence for your daily life.

What the Insiders Are Saying About the Jeep Recon

Since Jeep announced the plans for the Recon back in 2022, there’s been a lot of industry buzz about this vehicle. Can Jeep’s engineers really make good on its promise to make the switch to all-electric powertrains? While it may seem that Jeep would be the last to get an all-electric upgrade, the Recon brings us one step closer to that reality.

The Jeep Recon will be manufactured on the same STLA platform as the Wagoneer S. This setup allows for larger battery packs, so we expect the Recon to provide plenty of range and power. The all-electric Wagoneer S offers an impressive 600 hp and over 300 miles of range, and while that much power might be a bit zesty for the average low-gear off-road driver, the 617 lb-ft of torque that comes with it could be very handy on the trails, especially if you have the ability to use it for over 300 miles.

The larger platform and more modern design also suggest that the Recon will have more passenger and cargo room than the Wrangler. This would be a fantastic choice for drivers who are looking for family adventure time or who need a vehicle that can handle bigger crowds and more of their belongings.

While there are few interior details currently available for the Jeep Recon, the brand has assured the public that it will be more luxurious than the Wrangler. It’s also likely that the Recon will offer more safety and driver assistance technology in addition to the latest Jeep Uconnect infotainment system. While we aren’t sure which size touchscreen the Recon will receive, the images we have seen suggest plenty of technology and comfort features.

Jeep has announced a Moab trim for the Recon, which may be the top off-road option, but we can’t help but hope that a Rubicon version is also in the works. Still, we look forward to the Launch Edition to hit our showroom to confirm all of these details for us.

When Do We Get to Try Out the 2026 Jeep Recon?

According to Jeep, the 2026 Recon will hit the streets in late 2025. With that date rapidly approaching, some journalists and Jeep fans have already spotted pre-production models out and about. Experts also note that these models have been outfitted with testing equipment, which seems to indicate the Recon will be available sooner rather than later.

As an all-new model, the Jeep Recon can’t be compared to anything else. There’s never been a Recon before, so it’s hard to predict what Jeep has in mind for this new vehicle. Still, many drivers are excited to see if this new model fulfills its promises of practicality, ingenuity, and zero emissions.
