Why Sell Your Car to a Dealership
When you are looking to sell your car, the two main options available to you are selling it to a dealership, like us, or looking for a private buyer to sell to, which is to say, another person rather than a business. There is no denying that it has never been easier to list your vehicle for sale to private individuals; the Internet has made it much simpler to reach a wide range of potential buyers. And yet, the fact that it is easier does not necessarily mean it is the best or safest option when selling your vehicle.
For starters, even though you can list your vehicle on a website from the comfort of your own home, that does not mean you are going to find a potential buyer today or tomorrow. “Easy” is not necessarily the same as “fast,” so keep that in mind. It can take a while, and all that time, you are just waiting for someone who seems interested in buying your car to reach out to you. However, sometimes "easy" can be "fast" too. If you come to us today looking to sell your car, then we will inspect it today and potentially make you an offer on it today. Fast and easy.
The biggest single reason to sell to a dealership like us, however, is that working with a private buyer opens you up to a lot of potential scams. A reputable dealership will make the process of selling your car simple, straightforward and ensure you walk away knowing you got a good value for your car. There are a lot of people who look for private car sales as a way to scam others out of their money by underselling, making fraudulent payments that do not actually go through, or by using violence to outright steal your vehicle. If you insist on selling your car privately, then please take every precaution to do so safely and protect yourself from scams, fraud, and the potential for serious crimes.
What to Do Before Selling Your Car
When you are ready to sell your vehicle, there are a few things you should do first to make the process as simple as possible. For starters, make sure you gather up everything you have that came with the vehicle, including all of the documentation and accessories. If you removed the original floor mats to replace them with your custom ones, for example, then put the originals back in. Ensure you have your owner’s manual and other information, including the title for your vehicle.
One of the most important things you should do before selling your vehicle is give it a good clean inside and out. While you cannot undo years of wear and tear, a thorough cleaning will help your car look better and ensure you do not accidentally leave anything inside after you sell it. Do not worry about making repairs to the vehicle before you sell it to us. Since we have a service center here at our dealership, we can handle any maintenance or work that needs to be done for less money than it will cost you, so there is not much benefit for you doing it.
What You Need When Selling Your Car
Along with the title for the vehicle, you will need a photo ID as well as any maintenance and service records you have for your car. Please note that if there are multiple people on the title, then each person listed there will need to print and sign their name as sellers on the title. Be careful when filling out any of the information on the title as errors can create problems, so fill it out carefully and use blue or black ink since it is a legal document.
If you still owe money on a loan for your vehicle, and the title is not free and clear, then be sure to bring along any documentation you have for the loan. One of the best things about selling to a dealership like us is that we can help you get the loan figured out and cleared while buying your car – a private seller certainly will not do that. Once everything is handled, we will remove your license plates for you since those are yours and do not transfer with your car, and we will provide you with a bill of sale for your records.
You will then want to cancel your insurance on the car and return the license plates – or handle transferring them over to a different vehicle. Finally, within five days of selling your vehicle to us, you need to report the transfer of ownership to the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles, either online or at an office. If all of this seems a bit overwhelming, then do not worry because we will answer any questions you have and help you figure things out for finishing up your sale.
