Jeep is a brand that is often associated with adventure, rough terrain, and American resourcefulness. Jeep's intriguing history, which spans from the company's founding during World War II to its current standing as a global icon, shows both the changes it has made to satisfy the requirements and tastes of a wide range of drivers and the evolution of the automotive industry.
During World War II, the Jeep brand was formed out of necessity. In 1940, the United States Army was looking for a small reconnaissance vehicle. The vehicle needed to meet strict requirements set by the Army, including four-wheel drive, a low profile, and the ability to carry a crew of three men along with a mounted machine gun. Three companies submitted prototypes, but the Army ultimately chose to go with Willys-Overland's design, which became known as Willys MB. The Willys MB, which soldiers dubbed the “jeep,” quickly captured the hearts of those fighting for freedom thanks to its resilience and adaptability.
After World War II, Willys-Overland recognized that the tough construction of its vehicle could also be useful in non-combat situations. Plus, those returning from the war longed for the same connection they’d had with the “jeep” in a civilian vehicle. This led to the introduction of the CJ (Civilian Jeep) in 1945, which signaled the end of its military life. Thanks to its off-road characteristics, durable framework, and ability to go wherever and whenever, the CJ series gained enormous popularity among farmers, ranchers, outdoor adventurists, and more. During this time, the brand also introduced the first all-steel station wagon, the Willys Wagon, built to capture the hearts of families the same way it had soldiers.
The name “Jeep” became a registered trademark in 1950, leaning into the name that soldiers coined during World War II. Then, three years later, Willys-Overland was sold to Kaiser Motors. This sale didn’t stop the brand's focus on innovation, however, as was seen in 1954 when it introduced the CJ-5. The new Jeep featured enhanced horsepower and a longer wheelbase. Additionally, with the continued production of the Willys Wagon and the debut of the Wagoneer in 1963, the company cemented its foothold in the industry by offering dynamic choices in the growing sport utility vehicle segment. In fact, many consider the Wagoneer, with its combination of off-road prowess and on-road comfort, to be the first luxury SUV.
New development began in 1970 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) purchased the Jeep brand. It started off with a bang, introducing the Cherokee, which was a sporty two-door Wagoneer variant, as well as the CJ-7, with its extended wheelbase and roomier cabin. Improvements continued into the next decade with the introduction of the unibody XJ Cherokee, which offered a lighter and more efficient option while still retaining the off-road ruggedness the brand was known for.
Chrysler Corporation purchased the American Motors Corporation, and therefore the Jeep brand, in 1987, but that didn’t stop the brand from continuing on its upward trajectory. In fact, the introduction of the Grand Cherokee in the 1990s raised the benchmark for performance and luxury in the SUV category. Under Chrysler's ownership, Jeep also entered the crossover segment in full force, introducing models like the Compass and Patriot in the 2000s.
The Jeep lineup has continued to grow since the turn of the century, but it has also focused on making improvements to its most iconic models. For instance, the Wrangler lineup continues to preserve the brand's off-road legacy while also offering drivers who are focused on reducing their carbon footprint a 4xe plug-in hybrid option. At the same time, Colorado Springs drivers of all walks of life can find a Jeep for their needs, from the compact Compass to the Gladiator, which takes everything great from the first Jeep Truck and makes it even better. The brand has also improved its four-wheel drive systems over the years and focused on ensuring drivers have some of the latest technological and safety advancements in the industry.
Whether you’re looking for a new or used Jeep model, our team can help. We offer a large selection of both, ensuring you can find the right one for your needs. If you’re unsure whether you want to purchase a new Jeep or a used one, we can help you with that too. After all, both offer benefits to drivers. For example, purchasing a new Jeep ensures you get the latest features and the full length of your warranty. It also gives you peace of mind knowing that you’re the owner from the start and have the most comprehensive historical knowledge of the vehicle. Plus, you can take advantage of any rebates that might be available at the time of purchase.
However, we also know that many drivers prefer to purchase pre-owned, especially if you’re adding to your personal vehicle lineup in search of a rough and rugged vehicle to tackle off-road adventures on the weekends. Purchasing a used Jeep gives you the chance to find a top-tier model within your budget, when it might not have been if you purchased it new. Not only that, but many pre-owned vehicles are cheaper to insure, which gives your budget another boost. Used vehicles also let you skip the depreciation that hits new vehicles in their first year, which means you retain more value. Plus, you’ll be able to gain more knowledge about the model year and feel comfortable with the model and trim you choose. Either way, our team is here to help you find the right Jeep for you. You can check out our inventory online or stop by our Colorado Springs Jeep dealership to talk with a member of our team.
Jeeps are highly customizable, which is another reason why drivers love the brand. You can easily access what you need by clicking on the Parts tab here on our website, which takes you to options that include our Rock Solid Accessories shop or gives you information on some of the most common parts offered. You can also come in and talk with our team about the parts and accessories you need. You’ll find that we take the time to answer any questions you have, as well as ask a few of our own to make sure we’re on the same page. We’re also able to recommend options you might not have considered.
