The Wagoneer's Long History

To see a new Wagoneer alongside an original Wagoneer may cause some confusion. After all, with the elaborate luxury that radiates from the brand-new Wagoneer models, there's no way they are even closely related to the quintessential "grocery getters" of the past, right? It may come as a shock, but the new Wagoneer is a direct descendant of the Wagoneers of the past, which sported a wood-paneled body, boxy features, and a practical vibe that was perfect for families everywhere. The Wagoneer roared onto the scene back in 1963, showcasing utilitarian vibes, a rugged build, and of course, wood accents throughout.

The Super Wagoneer made its way to center stage in 1966, sporting more desirable driving features, including an adjustable steering wheel, power brakes, and more modern amenities. Soon after, the Limited trim made its way to the lineup. This high-end trim offered increasingly luxurious features, like power-adjustable seats and leather appointments, plus convenience features, like power windows and doors, cruise control, and more.

It wasn't until the '70s and '80s that the nameplate received even more stylish upgrades to appeal to more discerning drivers. From air conditioning to plush seating elements, the Wagoneer models of the '80s, known as Grand Wagoneers, were more appealing than previous models, further propelling the Wagoneer to greatness. The Grand Wagoneer made its debut in 1984, marketing itself up to more upscale buyers as a means to achieve the level of luxury required for any type of drive. From a new grille and hood ornament to comfortable headrests and a new steering wheel, the Grand Wagoneer succeeded in making a statement with luxury buyers.

As the years went on, the Wagoneer continued to experience upgrades with its design; however, its reign came to an end in the early 1990s. Decades passed, and many drivers believed the Wagoneer name was all but forgotten, but that would all change with the re-introduction of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer for the 2022 model year.
