How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

There’s a question we often hear that needs to be answered: just how often should you come in for your oil change? Well, there are two pretty easy answers: when you reach the mileage on that little window sticker we gave you from your last one or when that oil light comes on. In all seriousness, don’t forget about or put off your oil change. They may seem like nothing at first, but neglecting to change your oil on a regular basis could spell catastrophe for your car. And the less you have to shell out of your wallet for costly engine repairs, the better.

But when do you know the time is right for an oil change? Well, the standard estimated time for an oil change is around every 3,000 miles or every 6 months––whichever comes first. Newer cars can usually go a bit further, sometimes up to 6,000 miles or so, before they need an oil change. You’ll also be able to tell when you need an oil change through your vehicle. Nearly all modern vehicles are outfitted with a system that will analyze the oil life in your engine and tell you when you are going to need a change. You can also check your owner's manual for an estimated time frame of when you should get your oil changes or just check your oil levels the old-fashioned way by using the dipstick.

You’ll also be able to tell you need an oil change just by the way your engine is behaving. If it’s not performing the way it should, that likely means there is friction in the engine. Things aren’t lubricated very well, causing faults in vehicle performance. You’ll often be able to hear it by the sound your engine makes. If it sounds rough, bring it in, and we’ll fix it for you.
