The Ram Story

Today, Ram is one of the biggest truck brands around, renowned for offering powerful, rugged, and luxurious vehicles that can tackle any job and do so in style. However, that wasn’t always the case. The Ram brand got its start in 1980 when Dodge decided to make its truck line more competitive. To emphasize the hard-charging nature of the new pickup, Dodge named it the Ram, taking a cue from the old Ram logo that Dodge had used on its trucks decades before. The new truck and the Ram name were both an instant hit, revitalizing Dodge truck sales. As Ram steadily grew in popularity, it gained greater and greater independence from the larger Dodge brand until, in 2010, Ram was spun off as a fully independent brand.

Able to focus all of its efforts into building the best trucks possible, Ram grew even faster as an independent brand than it had under Dodge. While other manufacturers like Ford and GM were distracted designing cars and SUVs, Ram reinvented the truck. Innovations like coil spring and air ride suspension, the Uconnect infotainment system, and the RamBox storage system pushed the segment to new heights, forcing Ram’s competitors to scramble to keep up. Nearly every hot new feature found in modern trucks was done first by Ram. In 2019, Ram’s hard work paid off, and the Ram pickup surpassed the Chevy Silverado to become the second-best-selling truck in America.

The secret to Ram’s success is simple–provide real truck owners with the capabilities and features they need to get work done. Ram doesn’t add features simply to fill its marketing brochures; its innovations are focused on improving the truck for work and play. That is also why Ram outfits its models with powerful HEMI V8 and Cummins turbo-diesel engines that can provide the muscle and reliability that truck owners need. HEMI and Cummins are both legendary names, trusted by countless Americans over the years to work just as hard as they do. Put one of these mighty engines into a Ram truck, and you have a combination that simply can’t be beat.

What You Need to Know When Shopping for a Ram

Unlike other brands, which offer a vast number of trucks, cars, and SUVs of all shapes and sizes, Ram concentrates all of its efforts on building the very best full-size trucks possible. But don’t worry–there are still plenty of options for you to choose from, especially when you are shopping used. Ram offers three versions of its full-size trucks: the half-ton Ram 1500, the three-quarter-ton Ram 2500, and the one-ton Ram 3500. If you are looking for a do-it-all light-duty truck that can handle the sort of towing and hauling that comes with an active lifestyle, then the Ram 1500 is probably the perfect fit.

The latest generation of the Ram 1500 was introduced for 2019 and has shaken up the industry with its stylish and capable design. However, the previous generation is also worth considering if you are looking to save some money–Ram even continued production of the previous generation past 2019 under the name Ram 1500 Classic, which is something to watch for when shopping for used trucks.

The Ram 2500 and the Ram 3500 are the brand’s heavy-duty models, built to handle the heaviest jobs without breaking a sweat. If you need a serious work truck that can out-tow and out-haul your standard light-duty truck, then one of these two beasts is the right choice for you. Both of them come with either a HEMI V8 or a Cummins turbo-diesel for unbeatable performance. The Cummins is the top-of-the-line pick to maximize your towing potential, with the 2019 Ram 3500 being the first heavy-duty truck to offer 1,000 pound-feet of torque. But don’t count the HEMI out. The gasser offers higher payload ratings, lower maintenance costs, and can be more friendly during our cold Colorado winters.

If you don’t know whether you should pick the Ram 2500 or the Ram 3500, consider what you are looking to use the truck for. If you have a heavy gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailer to tow, then the Ram 3500 should probably be your first choice–especially in its dually configuration. The extra wheels on the rear axle send the payload and towing ratings through the roof, although they can make the truck a bit more of a hassle to maneuver when it's not pulling a trailer. If you aren’t looking for a dedicated tow rig but still need a truck that can handle more than a light-duty model, then the Ram 2500 is your best bet. This three-quarter-ton design is a great all-around truck that can handle a commute into Colorado Springs just as easily as a hard day’s work at the job site.
