The History of Chrysler

The Chrysler Corporation was founded in 1925 by Walter Chrysler after he reorganized the struggling Maxwell Motor Company. The first Chrysler vehicle was actually launched in 1924: the Chrysler Automobile, which featured a six-cylinder engine and offered impeccable design at an affordable price. It included a number of noteworthy features not found on other vehicles at that time, such as a high-pressure engine and an oil filter. These kinds of innovations would become a hallmark of the Chrysler brand, making it a successful manufacturer and one of the Big Three American auto brands alongside Ford and GM.

Starting in 1928, the Chrysler Corporation established several subbrands so that customers could more easily find the vehicles they were looking for. Plymouth was introduced for their most affordable models, while the DeSoto brand was used for medium-price models. It was also at that time that Chrysler bought the Dodge Brothers Company and began using its name for several cars and trucks. In 1934, Chrysler introduced their Airflow models, which had streamlined and aerodynamic bodies designed using the industry's first wind tunnels to ensure optimal performance.

Chrysler continued to develop numerous models throughout the 1950s and 1960s, alongside popular options from Dodge and Plymouth. The oil crisis of the 1970s hit Chrysler hard, and there were some noteworthy struggles throughout that decade and into the 1980s. This all began to change, however, when Lee Iacocca became CEO of Chrysler and moved the company into a new, more positive direction.

In 1985, Chrysler acquired American Motors Corporation, which brought the Jeep brand with it, along with manufacturing plants and other resources. Then, in 1998, Chrysler entered a partnership with Daimler-Benz, a German manufacturer, and they briefly became DaimlerChrysler until 2007. Chrysler's next partnership with a European manufacturer came in 2014, with the formation of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). In 2021, FCA merged with the French Groupe PSA (formerly Peugeot Citroën), resulting in the creation of Stellantis, which now oversees numerous brands, including Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and more.

300 – The modern Chrysler 300 is a full-size luxury car first introduced in 2005 and still available in its second generation. However, the 300 name dates back to 1955 and was once one of the most powerful production cars of its time.

Pacifica – While the Town & Country had been Chrysler's premier minivan for many years, the Pacifica is the modern take on the minivan and was first introduced in 2017. This impressive minivan is available with either a standard engine or a plug-in hybrid powertrain and has received numerous safety and overall industry awards.
